Mau Piailug

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: Master navigator Mau Piailug worked with anthropologists Stephen Thomas and Warren Goodenough on investigating open-water navigation in Polynesia. In 1967 he sailed a replica of an ancient Polynesian voyaging canoe, from Maui to Tahiti, using traditional methods without aid of charts. He has spent the latter years of his life teaching traditional sailing techniques in Hawai'i.
